Perchcast: Seahawk Swimming Spectacular
UNCW coach Bobby Guntoro has traveled a long road to Wilmington
Bobby Guntoro knew he loved UNCW before he ever set foot on campus.
Seriously.
After a chance encounter with legendary swimming coach Dave Allen at his high school, Guntoro committed to join the Seahawk program sight-unseen.
When he finally saw campus? Oh boy.
Since that day — Christmas Day 2007 — the feeling has only grown as Guntoro won CAA championships and set school records during what was a golden age for Seahawk swimming and diving, as UNCW won 13 straight league titles from 2002-14.
Guntoro, a native of Bali who moved to the United States as a teenager to pursue swimming, stopped by Perchcast to discuss his path to Wilmington, what drew him back into swimming after spending time as an accountant and how his parents have inspired his work ethic.
A 2011 graduate, Guntoro became the third coach in the program’s 42-year history when he was hired on July 23, 2020 — a decision that he made despite being offered the head coaching job at a Power Five program.
Even if you don’t know the difference between a breast stroke and a butterfly, you’ll enjoy hearing about Guntoro’s journey, his coaching philosophy and how he plans to appeal to UNCW supporters to check out a sport they might have previously overlooked.
